The Red Rock of Sedona
Sedona's beautiful Red Rock formations began with shifting land masses and up-lifting tectonic plates creating the Colorado Plateau. Over geological time, Sedona has found itself under water no less than 7-times. Next add relentless wind and water erosion topped with volcanic action about 10-million years ago and you have Sedona's Beautiful Red Rocks!
The red rock formations seem to have been carved into somewhat actual shapes and designs such as Courthouse Butte, Bell Rock, Submarine Rock, Sugarloaf Mountain and others. Several red formations seem to even hide the faces of people.
Man has only inhabited the Sedona area from 500 A.D. with the Sinagua Indians living in and around Sedona. Evidence of the Sinaguas can be found in the canyons of Sedona in the form of cave dwellings, pottery fragments and rock paintings. Sedona was considered a sacred land with ceremonial practices honoring the creator and ancestors.
Today, Sedona is a center for nature followers as well as those pursuing the ways of the Native Americans. Shamanic and earth religion students study the "ley lines" that they believe intersect in Sedona and create its energy vortexes. The most significant of these vortexes can be found in Boynton Canyon, Bell Rock, Airport Mesa and Cathedral Rock. Can you actually feel the "energy"? This depends on you. Some people will tell you undeniably "yes". If you are a skeptic, nothing will convince you. But almost everyone will tell you they felt awe and inspired if only because of the scenic beauty.
Sedona sits at an elevation of 4,500-feet. It has four distinct seasons with a touch of snow in the winter. Residents enjoy 300-days of sunshine a year.
Of the 5-million visitors a year, many will return again to visit. A few will return to purchase Sedona real estate such as a second-home or a golf property as a retreat away from their daily lives. Retirees often pick Sedona for their retirement home given Sedona's mild climate and scenic beauty. Others will purchase a lot upon which to build their dream home.
